DEN FASZINIERENDEN FLUSS ALMYROS MIT DEM KAJAK ENTDECKEN
Kajakausflug auf dem Fluss Almyros mit griechischem Mezè und lokalen Getränken
Das Ziel unseres Ausflugs ist es, den Fluss, der die größte Wassermenge auf ganz Kreta führt, zu erkunden, sein Feuchtgebiet mit zahlreichen Schildkröten, Fischen und Vögeln zu entdecken, die in und an diesem facettenreichen Fluss beheimatet sind. Sein Wasser ist im Winter süß und im Sommer brackig. In der Vergangenheit wurden hier Wassermühlen betrieben, um das lokale Getreide zu mahlen. Das Geheimnis des Wassers besteht darin, dass die Wissenschaft noch immer nicht sicher ist, woher es stammt.
Wir beginnen unseren Ausflug am Strand von Ammoudara und fahren flussaufwärts Richtung Südwesten zur Quelle des Flusses. Das Wasser des Flusses ist relativ tief und kristallklar. Am Ufer wachsen Schilf und eine Vielzahl von Bäumen und Pflanzen, darunter auch Gruppen der charakteristischen kretischen Palme (Phoenix theophrasti), die hauptsächlich auf Kreta vorkommt. Von hier aus erscheint der Gipfel des 800 m hohen Berges Stroumboulas, der nach dem berühmten sizilianischen Vulkan Stromboli benannt ist, sowie die Almyros-Schlucht. Wir paddeln etwa 1500 Meter flussaufwärts und anschließend zurück zum Strand von Ammoudara. Hier genießen wir zum Abschluss der Tour gemeinsam lokale kretische Köstlichkeiten (Mezè) mit lokalem Wein.

DISCOVER THE FASCINATING RIVER ALMYROS BY KAYAK

​The aim of our excursion is to explore the river, which carries the largest volume of water in the whole of Crete, to discover its wetlands with numerous turtles, fish and birds that are native to and along this multi-faceted river. Its waters are sweet in winter and brackish in summer. In the past, water mills were operated here to grind the local grain. The mystery of the water is that science is still not sure where it comes from.

We start our excursion at Ammoudara beach and head upstream towards the southwest to the source of the river. The water of the river is relatively deep and crystal clear. Reeds and a variety of trees and plants grow along the banks, including groups of the characteristic Cretan palm (Phoenix theophrasti), which is mainly found in Crete.

​From here the peak of the 800 m high mountain Stroumboulas, named after the famous Sicilian volcano Stromboli, appears, as well as the Almyros gorge. We paddle about 1500 metres upstream and then back to the beach of Ammoudara. Here we enjoy local Cretan delicacies (mezè) together with local wine to finish the tour.
