Duration: Approximately 7 Hours
We begin our journey west of Heraklion, right on the beach where the Almyros River meets the sea. This stunning coastal spot will also be our final stop, where we’ll come together for a delicious meal at Kostas’ taverna, enjoying authentic Cretan hospitality by the water.
We start by heading south into Crete’s peaceful countryside, leaving the city behind. Along the way, we pass the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) and the University of Crete, two of the island’s most important academic institutions. A few kilometers later, we reach ELMEPA (Hellenic Mediterranean University) before continuing our ride back into the vibrant city of Heraklion.
Here, we take a break at a traditional café, where we can relax with a drink, coffee, or tea, just like the locals do. We then ride through the entire city, making our way to the sea, where the Venetian Walls of Heraklion begin. During the Venetian and Ottoman periods, these massive fortifications completely surrounded the city, serving as its primary defense. The siege of Heraklion lasted an incredible 21 years (1648–1669), making it one of the longest sieges in world history. Today, the well-preserved walls stretch for about 2 kilometers, offering a glimpse into the city's fascinating past
At the end of the Venetian Walls, we arrive in Heraklion’s city center, where we stop at a local café to indulge in some sweet Cretan specialties. Just a short walk away, we discover the Museum of Ancient Greek Technology, a hidden gem in the heart of the city. This fascinating museum features over 60 functional exhibits, bringing to life the incredible technological achievements of ancient Greece.
After exploring the museum, we make our way to Heraklion’s old Venetian harbor, a place steeped in history and maritime charm. From there, we follow the scenic coastal road to our final stop—a welcoming restaurant where Kostas and his brother Nikos will be waiting to serve us a feast of authentic Cretan dishes, all enjoyed with a breathtaking view of the sea. And for those who want to take a dip, there’s always time for a refreshing swim before or after the meal!
